Meet the Diabetes Clinical Research Team
Professor Mark Evans
I am interested in (1) how brain detects changes in blood glucose and how this glucose-sensing interacts with peripheral metabolism (2) how defences against hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) may become abnormal in diabetes (3) the short and long term effects of episodes of hypoglycaemia on brain (4) new and innovative technology for monitoring and managing diabetes, including the development of closed loop insulin pump systems (the “artificial pancreas”).
Dr Charlotte Boughton
My research focuses on the use of new technologies to improve outcomes for people with diabetes. We undertake randomised controlled trials to evaluate the efficacy and safety of automated insulin delivery systems for people with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and cystic fibrosis related diabetes in the outpatient setting. We also investigate the role of ultra-rapid insulins to enhance the performance of automated insulin delivery.
To broaden access to technology and improve outcomes, we have developed educational tools for healthcare professionals and users to get the most out of diabetes technologies and ultimately to support adoption and reimbursement.
Jane Kennet
A clinical nurse who supports early-phase clinical research into type 1 and type 2 diabetes. As a research group we strive to improve the lives of people living with diabetes. Our work helps us understand more about diabetes onset or prevention, and supports the development of new therapies and technologies for diabetes. Responsible for the set-up, recruitment and data collection of the studies. Helping people with diabetes to engage in research safely through participation in our studies is a great privilege.
